The Flemish national movement, at least as represented by the N-VA, currently Belgium’s most popular party, is arguably the most pacific and benign separatist movement in Europe. The party proposes a gradual increase in democratic autonomy for Flanders which might, in time, lead to formal statehood. Its leader Bart De Wever, has made it clear that independence will come only peacefully and by consent, and has done his best to work responsibly with other parties from both linguistic traditions – an attitude not reciprocated by Belgian unionists, who still can’t bring themselves to accept the result of the last general election.
